- First year Design and construction of a vacuum/pressure vessel.
Modification of the numerical tools for the simulation of the flow in the
vessel.
- Second year Detailed flow measurements, such as first and
second-order statistics of the flow field together with timeseries and
spectra of the acoustic pressure fluctuations. Simultaneously, Direct
Numerical Simulations will be performed and the results will be compared
with the low Reynolds number experiments.
- Third year In the third year Large Eddy Simulations will be
performed to match the high Reynolds number experiments and a solid wall
will be included in the experimental setup.
- Fourth year In the fourth year the phd-students have to write
their phd-thesis and some unfinished work of the previous years can be
completed. The first applicant will continue with the simulation LES or DNS
of the flow with a solid wall.
- Fifth year The developed numerical methods will be tested on
other realistic problems, like the noise produced by the
wake of an object or the noise produced by a turbulent
diffusion flame.
The mechanical engineering department of the TU-Delft has the intention to continue the proposed
research after the five years period (see also the accompanying letter by Prof.ir. W.L. Dalmijn
, Dean of Mechanical Engineering).
